Fight, Russian Vs Arab, & The Internal Discourse

A cold beer at sundown on holiday in Egypt. A time to chat, a time to enjoy my dads company…
Suddenly a ruckus starts behind us.
Spinning round we see a Russian couple and an Egyptian guy fighting on the path between the pool and beach.
The Russian swings for the Egyptian, the Egyptian rips the Russians t-shirt.
The Russian lady comes at the Egyptian like a cat clawing for a ball on a string.
The Egyptian then pushes the lady over so the Russian guy picks up a stool to crunch the Egyptian with!
He stops in his tracks as about 10 other Egyptians crowd round and bustle around shouting inbetween the fighters.
Seeing the fray, the Russian at the other end of the bar has shot over and stands next to his comrade in the ripped t-shirt looking as large as he can make himself.
The argument rages and intermittent skirmishes break out; but why does the Russian who joined the fray keep looking over at me?
Three times he nervously looks round to me.
His expression is instantly recognisable as an appeal for help.
He is calling on me to help the tribe… he thinks I am Russian.
But I’m not Russian and don’t care which tribe is victorious, other than hoping nobody gets seriously hurt.
This begs the question..
If a British lady (yes Scottish ladies count) was pushed to the floor, and her husband surrounded, would the response be different?
The racist, of course, would distinguish between the African and European people involved; but right there, provoked by the moment, this does bring to the surface nationalism.
Essentially, neither belligerent is British, so the fray doesn’t move me to action and this internal observation both concerns and intrigues me.
So, is loving your countryman just a little bit more than other people something to be ashamed or proud of these days?

  1. You got it totally wrong with a very bad example as it would only take one Scotsman to handle 50 Egyptians. A lone Scotsman wouldn’t need any help

  2. If you accept as I do that eight people came off the ark after the flood, then we have descended from them and the differences have occurred in our make up since then.

Therefore there is not racism as only one Human race

    Its an interesting blog entry
